The Canon G9 looked and felt right as soon as I got it out of the box, and I was just hoping that it's image quality lived up to it's appearance. It does. It is much much better than any other compact I have used. The manual controls are excellent, the handling is very comfortable, and the operation is very well thought-out. I really enjoy using this little camera. The image quality is excellent, if not as good as that of my Nikon DSLRs. I did consider the Nikon P5100 compact (and I have not used one, so it might be superb!), but I decided to go for the Canon based on exhaustive trawling of forums and reviews by people who had used both cameras. It seemed to me that most people thought the image quality on both was good, that the grip on the Nikon was better, and the controls on the Canon were better - Amazon Reviewer.

"Just got mine two days ago and play with it constantly. I am now a geek. the guy who doesn't think this camera needs a tripod as he can't shoot without pressing the shutter.....just use the timer!! Amazed by the limited photo's I've taken so far. Time lapse is good fun. Bought this camera as I spend a lot of time outdoors and it is tough, takes really good panning shots (mountain biking) and gives me all the control of and SLR in a camera I can throw in my rucksack"

"I used to own an older G Series camera, and whilst you don't get the fold out screen anymore, you do get a HUGE screen. Whilst you don't get the remote control, you do get more timer options than you can shake a stick at. Whilst you don't get the fast lens, you do get a good optical zoom and an optical stabilizer in a very solid tidy little unit. As a family man I had to make a decision between a small camera that i could take "everywhere" with me or a bigger camera that i might get tired of lugging around. I made the right decision, this is a great camera."
